A sophisticated hipster and dapper dresser, Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) is a private eye in the film noir tradition, a cool investigator operating in a nameless waterfront city saturated by a jazz soundtrack that sets the tone for each scene. A frequent patron of Mother's, a wharf-side jazz club at which his nightclub singer girlfriend, Edie (Lola Albright), is employed, Gunn is the epitome of cool, calmly solving cases in style, getting his tips and cautions from coffee-drinking cop pal Lieutenant Jacoby (Herschel Bernardi).

Blind newspaper vendor Cliffy is afraid of escaped convict Brenners. Cliffy hires Pete to protect him from the thug and his sidekick, Springer.

Gunn is "sentenced" to death for the murder of a clerk.

Pete hears that he's marked for murder, but refuses police protection. The killer finds Gunn alone in his apartment and forces him to take a nighttime ride into the desert.

Actor Frankie Burns is murdered on a movie set. Gunn finds out that the crime was committed to cover up another crime.

Arnie Kelton, musician and ex-convict, asks Gunn to investigate his wife's death.

Someone is out to kill a former underworld boss, Joe Webber, who is back home after serving a lengthy prison term. Out of touch with the underworld, Webber hires Peter Gunn to find the identity of his would-be killer.

Arthur Cole accuses his boss of killing his wife and hires Gunn to prove it. Before long, however, Cole becomes a suspect himself.

Pete is hired by trumpet player Bud Bailey's wife. She is accusing her husband of wanting to kill her for the insurance money.

Ventriloquist Marvelous Marvon is found murdered after his act. Gunn is hired by Marcel Benoit to the find killer. Rinaldo, his dummy, turns out to be no dummy.

A little man with homemade bombs has been blowing up gangsters. Now the mob boss' have hired Gunn to find the culprit.

Charlie Barnes is arrested for bank robbery but cut a break to attend his daughter's wedding. Despite Gunn as his watchman, Barnes finds a way to disappear.

Ep 30: Death Watch

School teacher Paul Conlon is grading papers when he hears a scream, leading him to the discovery of a dead girl. He hires Gunn to prove his innocence.

Ep 31: Witness in the Window

Pete is hired by Anthony Scott to locate Marion Venner, who is blackmailing him after their affair ended. What he finds leads him to believe that the neighbor may have seen something and met with an unhappy demise.

There is an assassination plot against the governor, and Pete tries to find out who is behind it. The plot is a ruse for something even bigger as Jacoby and Gunn find out.

Ellen Clary is worried about Paulie Walker, who left a piece of paper with four names on it in her restaurant. The first name, Les Coombs, had a line through it—and now Coombs is dead.

Ep 28: The Murder Bond

Racketeer Joe Cully is out of the pokey on bail—half a million dollars. Not long afterwards Cully's car explodes, but the body found in the demolished auto can't be identified, and Joe Cully is nowhere to be found.

Hero-worshiping Caroline Haskins takes steps to wipe out the Yabocci family, Gunn's archenemies.
